I guess that these codes are needed when generating an EDL from a sequence:
in an editing room where an editing controller is the logical center, controlling the decks and also the video mixer, these codes are usually needed to tell the video mixer what kind of effect (transition, different wipes, etc..) have to be done. thought I didd not try to prove my guess.
